Japan Trip Winter 2011
Day 2: Hiking at Shiratani Unsuikyo

Day 2: 13 December 2011

JNTO: Yakushima Island
Map of Miyanoura

The hotel guy asked us if we were going hiking. We said yes, and he looked at our boots - not safe! Slippery, he said. We needed proper footwear. We rented a pair of clean and unsmelly hiking shoes each (¥600), he helped us with directions to the bus stop and we left.

Local Buses in Yakushima

Bus schedules, to the minute!
We took the 8:28 bus (¥500, 30 mins)

Opposite the bus stop

Lots of greenery

Driver stopped along the road to let us looks at the monkeys

The town far far away now

Go to the loo before the 4 / 5 hour hike!
 And off we go...

My first thought was "WTF did I get myself into?!"

Entrance fee: ¥300

Who'd pollute the air with cigarette smoke?

Follow the red ribbons

About 5 hours later, we're back at the entrance. The ticketing lady let us sit in the hut while waiting for the bus. We must have looked like we were freezing, she even made us coffee and grilled sweet potato :)

A fancy way of saying 'Do not litter'

The bus we took
Miyanoura Port
We went to the port for lunch, but it's devoid of eateries. We walked around the area and bought some souvenirs.

Signs are in English

Empty streets
No need to buy, just rent!
Finally, we had lunch here...
Owner speaks English. We saw mementos from around the globe.

An old-school Hollywood movie was on

Latte & Macchiato

Yakushima soba

Baked rice
After the lunch / dinner, we walked back to the hotel. Rest the legs after all that walking, hopping and climbing. Pack up, cos the next day we were flying out, back to where we can get wifi!

Goodnight Yakushima!
